Island Cowgirls

PBS

Island Cowgirls follows two Paniolo, or Hawaiian cowgirls, who have dedicated their lives to caring for their family ranches. Ranchers play a vital role in Hawai‘i’s land management, yet lease instability presents challenges to long-term environmental solutions. On the northwest side of Hawai‘i Island, La‘i Bertlemann faces a pivotal choice: pursue college on the mainland or stay home to continue her family’s ranching legacy under her grandfather’s guidance. Meanwhile, on the south side, Lani Cran Petrie works to ensure the future of her ranch while navigating the uncertainties of an expiring lease.
